Wienert Fault

TYPE OF FAULT: right-lateral strike-slip
LENGTH: 10 km
NEAREST COMMUNITIES: Imperial, El Centro
MOST RECENT SURFACE RUPTURE: November 24, 1987, Mw6.6, along northwest half; otherwise, Holocene
SLIP RATE: between 1.0 and 6.0 mm/yr (?)
INTERVAL BETWEEN MAJOR RUPTURES: unknown
PROBABLE MAGNITUDES: ML5.5 - 6.3, alone; Mw6.0 - 6.8 when rupturing with nearby faults, as in 1987
OTHER NOTES: The Wienert fault is a southeastern extension of the Superstition Hills fault zone, and experienced about 30 cm of total slip during and shortly after (as afterslip) the 1987 Superstition Hills earthquake, though only about half of its length exhibited surface rupture. The Wienert fault's previous rupture probably occurred within the 330 years before 1987.
