Seismogram Transfer Program (STP)

STP is a client-side program for retrieving triggered and continuous waveform and phase data from the Southern California Earthquake Data Center. This program can be run using the Web-based graphical interface. For more extensive documentation on STP, the STP User Manual (Version 1.01) is now available.

Waveforms retrieved via the Web-based version of STP can be downloaded from the Data Center's anonymous FTP site, either using the graphical interface itself, or by manually running FTP and retrieving the data from: pub/stpdata/username on scedc.caltech.edu

STP can also be run as a stand-alone program on the user's local computer. A tar file of the stand-alone version can be retrieved via FTP from: pub/programs/stp on scec.gps.caltech.edu, or downloaded here.

Users running the stand-alone version of the software can retrieve the waveforms directly to their local machines.

STP can access waveform and phase data from 1932 through the present (1978-80 is currently unavailable).

WEB-BASED VERSION

Through popup menus, the STP Web site can be used to search for and select up to 100 events based on origin time, magnitude, location, depth, and/or type; to choose individual stations or entire networks; and to select channel(s). Repeat users may wish to store a user profile to retain a set of default stations or channels from which to retrieve data in future.

STAND-ALONE VERSION

After downloading the STP tar file from the Web site or retrieving it using FTP, extract the tar archive by running tar -xvf stp.tar,then compile the STP program by running make stp. STP currently compiles under Solaris and Linux. Execute stp to start the program. You can then enter HELP at the prompt for a list of commands. Enter HELP TOPIC for documentation pertaining to topic. NOTE: stp is not case-sensitive.

    By default, a maximum of 100 events are listed. To change this, enter SET NEVNTMAX nnnn, where nnnn is the new limit.

The STP program creates a directory for each event with the name eventid and puts the seismograms there, along with a file of event parameters, eventid.evnt.
